Andre 3000 on Semi-Pro & the State of Hip-Hop

There aren't too many rappers I fully respect but Andre 3000 is one I admire the most. If things come through as I hope, his long-awaited solo album will drop sometime in the near future and just imagine the impact something like that will have on Hip-Hop. M. Night Shyamalan's The Happening [Trailer]

M. Night Shyamalan has gotten a lot of negative criticism following the string of releases since The Sixth Sense. His unique style and reliance on the ever elusive "plot twist" has turned fans off and it's sad because I'm one of the few that actually enjoy his work. I think the guy is extremely talented and I've loved every movie he's made so far. Save for Lady in the Water, which I thought was decent, I think M. Night is a modern day genius of his era so I'm anxious to see what he has in store with his latest film, The Happening.

Starring Mark Wahlberg and Zooey Deschanel, The Happening is a paranomal thriller in which a family must survive a global economic crisis. Now, on the surface, this seems kind of bland when compared to M. Night's previous work but fans of Night know not to assume anything when it comes to his films. Anyway, here's the trailer for The Happening and it is scheduled to hit theaters Friday June 13, 2008. {On a side note...this will be M. Night's first R-rated release...just thought I should mention}

Untraceable

Let’s face it. Technology can be a gift and a curse in our day and age, but it’s not without its flaws. YouTube has become a worldwide phenomenon and it’s amazing how things have become so readily accessible, to the point, that all it takes is one simple click of the mouse. Regardless of what you want to see, anything can be found on the net and the new movie Untraceable explores this fact, not only explicitly, but rather well, if I must say so myself.

First off, in no way am I advocating that this is a good movie because it’s average at best. Unlike most films that build on the hype and speculation of the person behind all the wrongdoing, this film fails to do so and it kinds of leaves you with no incentive to watch after you find out what’s going on early on. And what’s that you ask? Well, basically the premise of this film is founded around a serial killer who rigs contraptions to kill his victims based on the number of hits received through a website (www.killwithme.com). Featuring a live streaming video of the events as they happen, the more people that log on, the faster the victim dies. Perpetuating this fact, Diane Lane plays a cyber cop named Jennifer Marsh who must race against time to piece together this mystery, in regards to the wellbeing of herself and her family.

Now, there are many things wrong with this film but to get into them all would be a waste of time. A full-length theater release was not warranted here and would’ve been perfectly acceptable as a straight to DVD flick but don’t waste your time (or money) on this. It’s not worth the price of admission and you’ll be happy you did.

Consequence Feat. John Legend: Feel This Way [Video]

It's no secret that I'm a fan of Conseqence but this guy deserves more recognition then what he gets. His critically acclaimed debut album, Don't Quit Your Day Job, was released last year and it is, by far, one of the most slept on since I can remember. He may not be for everybody, so be forewarned, but he is a part of Kanye's G.O.O.D Music roster and Kanye knows what he's doing. Anyway, here's the latest video from Consequence and it features John Legend. The song is called "Feel This Way" and the video is actually pretty good so check it out.

Ashanti: The Way That I Love You [Video]

tiI'm not sure if this is the official video or the director's cut as others are saying it to be but, this is surely different for Ashanti. I've never heard the song before finding this on YouTube but I kinda dig it to be honest. Ashanti has always been cool to me and I've always had her as this "girl next door" type but as long as she doesn't go crazy like this in real life, then everything will be cool. Anyay, enough dialouge. Check out the video and let me know what you think.

Return to St. Elsewhere

I don't know about you, but I'm anxious for the impending return of Gnarls Barkley. I loved their alternative, yet mellow approach to music packaged as St. Elsewhere last year so once I got word that the follow up, The Odd Couple, would be dropping this spring I just had to blog about it. It's all about the music with these guys and the fact that they could care less what other people think, is what people and fans alike are drawn to. Now, things like the above makes you kinda question what goes on in their head but the motto of "dare to be different" is stretching here. No amount of desire to seperate myself from the pack would propel me to wear a wedding dress but Cee-lo, you're obviously more of a man than me. As long as the music is good and the same formula is applied that worked the first time around, I'm sure i'll be content with this new offering. Sadly, I guess all I can do now is just wait.

In honor of their upcoming release, I figured I'd take it back to where it all began. Here's the flashback of their innovative video for "Crazy" and this video is, by far, the best thing in a long time. It showed that some people in the music industry actually care when it comes to being creative and this takes creativity to a whole 'nother level.

Ooh La La

Sports Illustrated has kinda fallen off, in my opinion, but I think these pics of La La Vasquez may change my mind. I dug the recent swimsuit issue, a while back, that featured Beyonce and this latest spread only moves things back in the right direction. My only question is, why hasn't Carmelo wifed this girl yet? They've been engaged for like forever and a day. It just really bothers me because he's letting all this go to waste and leaving the door open for another man to come in between them, when/if things start to go sour. Then again (pauses to contemplate)...forget about everything I just said. Carmelo, continue to do what you want because dreams do come true and after these pics, I know one wish that's moved to the top of my list.

Maybe it's just me but does anybody get this new video from Kanye West? I mean, I like the song and everything but it's not exactly what I had envisioned for the video. From what I understand, this is only a teaser of the real thing but I hope that's true because this is just weird...even for Kanye. For what he's known for in the past, as far as his videos are concerned, this is a little too simple so I'm sure he has something up his sleeve but I can't hate. Rita G (the girl in the vid) looks great so, if nothing else, this video makes for some good eye candy. Anyway, here's the vid. Check it out, comment, let me know what you think cuz I'm confused.

Is it even a question as to who shut it down at the Grammy’s last night? Kanye West did his thing and all of his hard work has paid off big time. Already going in with 8 Grammy nominations, Kanye picked up 4 of those including Best Rap Album for Graduation, Best Rap Solo Performance for "Stronger," Best Rap Song for "Good Life" with T-Pain and Best Rap Performance by a duo or group for "Southside," a collaboration with fellow Chicago rapper Common. All that aside, Kanye killed it on the performance tip, as well, so for those that missed it here’s the video of how it all went down.

Flavor of Love 3

I guess if at first you don’t succeed try again, but this is starting to get ridiculous. Now, I’ve never watched a season of Flavor of Love but I’m sure I’m not missing much. I’m not knocking anybody who does but how many times are we gonna be reduced to the same ’ol recycled crap that VH1 is starting to put out. Just because Flavor of Love was mildly successful doesn’t mean that any of use were interested in seeing Brett Michaels, Tila Tequila, and New York find love as well. All of this shit is basically the same show, just with different washed up people with no talent so it just doesn’t make sense to me that people actually watch.

To each its own I suppose, but I just had to write about this when I saw that the new season of Flavor of Love premiers tonight on VH1. The casting call special for this was kinda entertaining, I’ll admit, but it’s just sad knowing what some of these women are willing to do to “be” with Flav. Don’t any of these women have any respect for themselves? Or better yet, do they know what Flavor Flav looks like? Dude is ugly as hell and that’s being blunt but who cares? Half the girls that come on the show are only looking for their 15 minutes of fame but I really think that this whole love thing is starting to overstay its welcome. All these love shows have made me lovesick and if I see one more season of this crap, I swear I’mma throw up.

Sorry for the visuals but you gotta feel me on this. Reality TV is ruining the general public and the more we feed into it, the more we’re subjecting ourselves to in the future. The solution? Be creative and craft something for a change instead of being cheap. Then again that would require a thought, or innovation, and apparently Hollywood has been too far corrupted by the almighty dollar to do such a thing.

Trina: Smooth Magazine Cover

It’s amazing how much photo shop can help a picture look this good but it’s no secret that Trina has lost a lot of weight either. Her thickness that she was known for is no longer there and it kind of makes you mad a little bit but at least she looks better than she did a few months ago. I’m not exactly sure of the timeframe but I remember this whole deal of a photo shoot she did and she looked anorexic. Now, knowing what she use to look like it’s a pretty big deal but as long as she’s comfortable with her look then I guess I can’t complain. All I’m saying is that I prefer the old, thick Trina and I’m sure a lot of her fans would agree as well.

Anyway, here’s the Diamond Princess gracing the latest issue of Smooth magazine. Go pick it up for more pics but if you’re lazy then look ’em up on the internet. I’m sure they’ve leaked by now so someone probably already has them.

Def Poetry Spotlight: Amanda Diva

On the surface, Amanda Diva may seem like just another average connoisseur of Hip-Hop but for her to temporarily replace one of the members of Floetry, that’s saying a lot. Her unique, yet innovative, style is refreshing beyond most and can, simply, be attributed to what she brings to the table as a performer. Whether it’s intellect, humor, political points of view, you name it…Amanda has a diversified range of talent to express herself through. The world is her stage and we are merely listeners in this Hip-Hop odyssey spoken by Amanda Diva.

It wasn’t until 2001 that this beautiful, young poet came onto the scene but her impact has been felt ever since. More recognizable from her work as the “face of Hip-Hop” on MTV2, Amanda Diva has surely made ends meet. Whether it’s blessing mics at Russell Simmons Def Poetry Jam, performing alongside The Last Poets, or holding it down on Sirius Satellite radio, Ms. Diva has undoubtedly become a triple threat.

Although most of her work goes unnoticed, the persistence and perseverance remains the same. Poetry is passion and finding ways to express that passion can be hard for some, but Amanda is unconventional in that she is able to not only express herself through spoken word but through singing as well. Due to creative differences between the two original members, Amanda was temporarily linked to being a part of Floetry but has since withdrawn to being solo. Just so you know, Floetry has since reconciled their differences also but this is still a huge honor for someone like Amanda to be apart of. Her flexibility for expression has no boundaries and that right there will lead her to heights that people only dare to dream.

The Re-Up Gang: We Got It 4 Cheap Vol. 3

The Clipse have been much maligned in their career but none of that really seems to matter. Hardcore fans of their gritty, graphic street poetry embrace them for what they are and what they aren’t is commercial. Album sales don’t necessarily translate into success but since when was going Gold a bad thing? Sure, an album being given a XXL rating by the magazine of the same name should probably move more units then what it did, but the respect factor of making Clipse relevant can be attributed to their work in the streets. Their We Got It For Cheap series has kept fans full in between albums and some would argue that what they spit on mixtapes is just as potent as what they do on albums. Either way you cut it, The Clipse have carved a niche in Hip-Hop and depending on if you’re buying what their selling, the word is out that The Clipse just think they’re better.

The knock on the Clipse has always been that all they talk about is coke. Never one to shy away from such notions, The Clipse openly acknowledge this constructive criticism and have vehemently responded by reiterating that they make music for the ones on the corner. Clearly a product of their environment, as well, The Clipse are surely talented at what they do but you can’t argue against the fact that they’ve been consistent since day one. Not to take anything away from them, or the rest of the Re-up Gang, but in the “spirit of competition” I’d be hard-pressed to label them as one of the best ever. Aside from their delivery, metaphors, and graphic storytelling, I put them on a notch above half the rappers in the game now but they still have more work to do to reach the level of elite. Proudly, We Got It 4 Cheap Vol. 3 may be that one step forward.

Getting things started, “Here’s What They Think About You” is solid as an intro and effective in introducing this new mixtape. Basically a chant of R-E U-P G-A-N-G, one thing’s for sure, the Clipse are making it known what’s about to happen. Segueing into another intro, the follow up has them flowing over B.G.’s “I Hustle” beat and the whole Re-up Gang kills it. Not to mention, a couple of lyrical jabs are thrown at Lil’ Wayne on here so it’ll be interesting to see if Wayne responds. The history between The Clipse and Wayne have not all been rose petals so we’ll have to see how this latest slight will unfold. Continuing, The Re-up Gang rip it over a variety of different beats from Jay-Z’s “Roc Boys” to Jim Jone’s “Emotionless” and delivers a timeless piece of work in the process. Most mixtapes lag somewhere throughout but We Got It 4 Cheap Vol. 3 is hard from start to finish. Further proof of that can be heard on “20k Money Making Brothers On The Corner”. By far, this is the hardest record on here and it’s stereotypical Clipse but I loved it. I haven’t liked a mixtape this much since Wayne’s “Drought 3” but this will definitely go right up there as one of my favorites. Clipse fans rejoice. This Re-up was, seemingly, well worth it.

The Eye

Maybe it’s a lack of originality when it comes to making movies, but can someone please explain to me this fascination with Japanese horror films? It’s bad enough remakes have become the new “thing” to do in Hollywood but save for The Ring, all of those that followed were really not necessary. It’s not that I’m downplaying the value that some of these films have, but if you’ve seen one then you’ve pretty much seen ‘em all. Enough is enough, we get the fact that Japanese culture embodies the supernatural but why is that we have to turn to another culture in order to be entertained? I guess it all goes back to a lack of originality but, nevertheless, The Eye opened this weekend and after sitting through this dull movie, I almost wished I was blind. Unfortunately, the latter was not viable but, still, I digress.

Let’s see, how could I put this? The Eye is a pathetic attempt at a remake of the same name. Americanized, I say that the film is a failure but, from what I have come to expect, I’m not really surprised. Jessica Alba is decent and does a solid job in carrying her first “real” solo project but I’m still scratching my head, wondering why she would take this role. Was it the fact that Sarah Michelle Gellar or Jennifer Love Hewitt were too busy? Unfortunately, we’ll probably never know the answer but, still, I doubt any of the two would’ve been able to save this movie from the purgatory that it is.

My whole complaint with this movie is that it seems kind of dry. Nothing really scares me anymore when I go to the theater and I think that is the one thing that is missing from today‘s horror movies. All the focus is on how much a film can bring in, instead of the lasting effect it will have on the audience and until actors, producers, writers, and directors realize what is more important, I fear that things will never change.

Am I wrong for wanting to be scared? No, I pay my $7.00 bucks or so to be entertained but when I’m not, I feel as though I have a legitimate right to complain. The Eye, for what it’s worth, is not worth the price of admission but if people continue to support mediocrity then this formula Hollywood has been using will only result in more of the same.

Artist of the Month: James Morrison

Singer, songwriter James Morrison is definitely a breath of fresh air when it comes to music. His distinctive style and presence exudes contemporary soul and even though his fan base is steadily growing, he remains Britain’s best kept secret.

It’s hard, I imagine, to have crossover appeal to American culture but Morrison manages to do so just fine. His debut album, Undiscovered, has sold 2,300,000 copies worldwide and it’s no wonder why people are starting to take note. Undiscovered is an ingenious masterpiece filled with melodic tunes of pop, rock, and soul and the fine line between the three is what Morrison is able to pull together and make work. All the accolades he’s received thus far are well deserved and if I’m able to bring him one more fan, then that’s one more person that he didn’t have before.

Anyway, I figured the best method for all this would be to share his sound so, I’ve included a few of his videos as well. I realize that not everybody will like this guy but if you’re open when it comes to music, then I’m sure you will be entertained. All I know is that I like him so, hate it or love it, I just wanted to share something I think should be heard.

Super Bowl XLII Preview: New York Giants Vs. New England Patriots

The road to Super Bowl XLII has come full circle and what a great match up we have on paper. The undefeated New England Patriots are prime to make history as the first NFL team to go 19-0 but, the only thing standing in their way is the New York Giants. Now, these two teams met in the last game of the regular season and even though the Patriots won, the Giants proved that they match up well. Therefore, any uncertainty or unfamiliarity can be thrown out the window. These two teams are hungry for a championship and regardless of the outcome, it should make for a great game.

If I must say so myself, I’m a little disappointed that Brett Favre and the Green Bay Packers are not playing in this game. Even though I had a feeling that the Giants had a real good chance to win that game, my heart was all for a Green Bay/New England Super Bowl. I’m sure I’m not alone on this but Brett Favre Vs. Tom Brady would be something to see. Yet and still, I’m excited for the current match up and, being a Patriots fan, I’m anxious to see if the Pats can make history or not. Lord knows I want them to but I’m not discounting the fact that the Giants actually have a legitimate shot to pull off an upset of monumental proportions. Doing so leaves room for that to happen and, trust me, that’s the last thing I would ever want.

On the surface, this match up seems kind of bland, as compared to what a Green Bay/New England would’ve been like, but I’m not complaining. Mush has been discussed recently over the health of Tom Brady and his “injured” ankle but I doubt that it will play a factor if any at all. I expect Tom Brady to be at his best and after a sub par performance in the AFC championship game, he’s definitely due for something spectacular. The same could be said for Randy Moss as well. His production from the regular season to the playoffs has diminished greatly but for him not to show up on the biggest stage would be ludicrous to think otherwise. Plain and simple, the Patriots just know how to make plays when they need to and until somebody proves differently, I don’t see how anybody can pick against them.

So, I’ve said all this to say what? I think it’s pretty obvious as to who I’m taking to win this game but I think it’s going to be a close, hard fought affair. The Giants front four are capable of getting pressure on Brady and if they can capitalize on any turnovers then I give them a real good chance to win. The only thing is, no team has been able to beat the Patriots for 60 minutes and I feel this game will be no different. Remember this moment, people, we are witnessing history in the making. 17-0 is the past. 18-0 is the present. 19-0 is imminent.

Juno

Growing up is awkward enough but imagine having a kid at 16? Just thinking about it makes you realize how many teenage girls are faced with this situation daily, but the new movie Juno takes an interesting look at things and makes you laugh while doing so.

A surprising hit among moviegoers, Juno has become a must-see. Not only have critics garnered much praise but strong word of mouth has helped propel Juno to be very profitable at the box office. Very much deserved, Juno can be likened as this year’s Little Miss Sunshine. On the surface, the two are quite similar in style and approach but I felt that Juno resonated more on a personal level. While it’s true that dysfunction is a prevalent theme in some families, Juno’s underlying theme of teenage awkwardness is something we’ve all experienced at one time or another. That being the case, I feel as though more people will be able to relate and not to mention, it makes for a better movie also.

All analysis aside, Juno is basically about a young girl (of the same name, obviously) who finds out she is pregnant. Rather then wanting to keep it, she opts for putting it up for adoption and therein lies the set up for this wonderful story. I don’t want to give too much away but it really is a good movie and I recommend it to those who are a fan of sarcastic comedies. Like I said, it’s sort of on the same plane as Little Miss Sunshine but more complete, if that makes sense. You just have to see it for yourself to understand what I mean and maybe, just maybe, you will join me and others like myself who’ve fallen in love with Juno.

Hell‘s Angels: Kiya Roberts & Farelle Walker

Admit it, Hell Date is a guilty pleasure for many and if you’re like me, then you can’t help but watch. It’s rare that a television show, let alone a reality dating show, could be so popular but Hell Date is among the highest rated programs on BET and, for once, I applaud the network for actually getting something right. I was a little disappointed with the departure of Free and AJ from 106 & Park and I couldn’t quite understand the cancellation of BET Uncut but at least things are back moving in the right direction. Save for a couple of missteps, BET is slowly becoming the product of network shows, a' la MTV, but whether that is a good or bad thing remains to be seen. Me personally, I don’t watch much television except for anything on ESPN but when I do, I like what I like. Music is a big part of my life and music videos are important regardless of what anybody else says. So, what’s the point of all this? Plain and simple. Less shows. More videos.

Other than the fact that I pretty much rambled on about nothing, Hell Date is one of the most entertaining shows I’ve ever seen. It’s not quite groundbreaking or the best thing since sliced bread but it’s good at being a different spin on the reality dating show. Most shows like this are generic, plain, and lack no real substance but Hell Date is unlike no other. I mean, what other show do you know that has a “height challenged” devil popping up out of nowhere? That right there lets you know that this show is hot. Yes, in deed, this show is off the chain but no show is complete without that one thing that just draws you in. What is that you ask? Well, I’m glad you did. Allow me to introduce you to Farelle Walker and Kiya Roberts.

Kiya Roberts: There’s no denying that Kiya Roberts has put in hard work to get where she’s at. Having appeared in her first musical as a teenager, her drive and determination has fueled this fruitless dream of hers and ever since, her life has been one big stage play.
Her natural acting skills are undeniable and in search of further room for improvement, Kiya moved early on to Washington, D.C. to pursue a BFA in theater arts at Howard University.

Now, while struggle is common for an up-and-coming actor, Kiya also pursued music as well. Performing background for other artists was commonplace during her time in Los Angeles but in between classes, independent film projects, and what not, it’s hard for one person to focus.

Never one to be deterred, Kiya has definitely paid her dues. As one of the most popular cast members of the hit BET show Hell Date, Kiya remains humble by her success. Her love for old school music and fashion defines her sense of style and with an incredible presence, this rising star will be here for years to come.

Farelle Walker: A native of California, Farelle Walker was destined for fame. Her natural “glow” as an actress is unmistakable and it’s no secret why people love her. Her God given talent is remarkable and using the direction of never being satisfied with “average", Farelle is in pursuit of the limelight.

A star of her own, Farelle’s popularity has surely grown since becoming a staple on BET’s Hell Date. She is among the most popular and it’s even rumored that BET only agreed to pick up the show because of her. That pressure alone would probably deter your average newcomer to the entertainment business but Farelle has come a long way. Years of studying the arts and small roles here and there have helped her polish her renown acting skills and even though Hell Date plays more like a small venue, her ultimate goal is to shine for the whole world to see.

Only time will tell how things will play out but for now, this star is focused on what’s in front of her. Hell Date is one of the highest rated programs on TV and if things continue to go as they should, it shouldn’t be long before Ms. Walker is a household name.

Who’s That Girl?--Chelsea “Diznee” Daniels

I’m not gonna sit here and pretend like I know anything about this girl because I don’t. All I know is that she looks good and I figured I’d share my thoughts instead. Now, I realize that most girls that look too good to be true are probably a product of photoshop but I think this girl is all natural. Yeah, yeah yeah, the picture to the left says otherwise but I found her OFFICIAL MySpace page and her personal pics tell a whole ‘nother story. Anyway, I think it’s cool that modeling is not her main goal and that she’s focused on being a newscaster/television host, so props on having a dream outside of her body. Whatever she does in life will be a success, at least that’s the vibe I get from her, but it all comes back to looks. This girl is a 10...hands down.

Kanye West Presents: The Glow in the Dark Tour

Kanye West is ahead of his time. I don’t care what anybody else says but the guy is a genius as far as I’m concerned. Not only are all of his albums solid, well-rounded pieces of work but the guy just knows how to get the most of the limelight he’s in. Anyway, news of Rihanna and N.E.R.D. joining Kanye’s Glow in the Dark tour broke this week and with Lupe Fiasco already down, this tour sounds like it’s going to be crazy. Kanye, Lupe, and Pharrell are supposed to be forming some kind of band so it would be kind of cool to hear some new material from the trio but this is still pretty big for music. I’m a fan of all the artists involved so this is almost like a dream come true! Well, maybe I’m exaggerating a little bit but you get the idea. Now, if only I could get people to stop saying that I look like him. It was cool at first but now it’s ridiculous. See what I have to live with, LOL?

American Idol--Brandon Black

This guy is hilarious. Like I said before, the only reason I watch American Idol is because of this and this guy is the cream of the crop. Dude has a a dead on imitation of Katt Williams and his audition will go down as one of the "worst of" but it's funny. Check it out.
