Lyfe Jennings: Lyfe Change
It’s funny, pressure can be a gift and a curse but Lyfe Jennings seems unfazed when it comes to matters of fame. Case and point, his debut album was critically acclaimed for it’s texture/content so you would think that the pressure to follow that up would be a little overwhelming. Seemingly so, The Phoenix was not quite up to par with Lyfe’s first opus but it was still “soul food” nonetheless. Now, hungry for more, Lyfe Jennings is back with his third album, Lyfe Change, and while it deviates slightly from the Lyfe Jennings we’re used to, it’s still the same unique blend of ghetto gospel we’ve come to know and love.
Let’s face it. Quality music is hard to come by these days but for artists like Lyfe, it just seems to come naturally. His lead single “Never Never Land” is a soulful perspective on the whole “30 is the new 20” craze and that kind of endearing message is hard to come by. Songs like “Cops Up”, “Wild, Wild, Wild”, and “You Think You Got It Bad” stand out, again, because of the message behind each one and I’ve come to realize that this is what I love about Lyfe the most. We all go through rough patches in our life and we all go through periods of uncertainty. However, when things come together we seem to forget where we came from and all Lyfe is saying is embrace the good with the bad.
Overall, Lyfe Change is a great CD but, me personally, I was spoiled off of Lyfe 268-192. No other album of Lyfe’s will ever measure up, in my opinion, but one thing I will say is that Lyfe Change is a step above The Phoenix. As much as I tried, I couldn’t get into that particular album so it’s good to see Lyfe rebound and deliver more of that “chicken and collard green” music a la Anthony Hamilton. Like his mama said, “There’s only two things in life that are constant and that’s change and change”. What do you know? She was right.
Busta Rhymes Is Blessed, New Album Due This Summer
It’s been a rough year or so for Busta Rhymes and, as most of you know, it all started with the shooting death of his best friend/bodyguard Israel Ramirez. From there, suspicion abounded about Busta not willing to cooperate with the police in a attempt the capture the suspects but, for his sake, feel free to reserve judgment. Regardless, Busta seems unfazed and with this new album, I’m Blessed, I’m sure he has quite a bit to address.
Featuring production from the likes of Pharrell, Cool & Dre, and the legendary DJ Scratch, I’m Blessed is sure to be another surefire hit for Busta. Already, his lead street singles “Don’t Touch Me (Throw Da Water On ’Em)” and “Where’s My F**kin’ Money” are circulating quite a bit of buzz but, also, peep the grown & sexy “Lights, Camera, Action”. I’m not sure if this track will make the final cut of the album or not but it’s reminiscent of his collaboration with Janet a few years back on "What’s It Gonna Be”.
You would think that for an artist as well established as Busta that complacency would sink in at this stage of his career but it’s good to see otherwise. So many artists lose that proverbial hunger after years of longevity but one thing’s for sure, Busta has remained consistent. As far as guest appearances on this new album, I’m Blessed is packed with a bevy of features that include: Common, Mary J. Blige, T.I., Jamie Foxx, Linkin Park, Lil’ Wayne, Justin Timberlake, Ludacris, and more. However, I’m more interested in hearing what Busta has to say. The Big Bang was a disappointment, in my opinion, so hopefully I’m Blessed will be a gift rather than a curse.

Meagan Good Set To Appear In Saw V
Now, being that I'm a huge fan of these films and somewhat attracted to Meagan Good, I'm interested to see how this marriage between the two will work out. Meagan hasn't really garnered much attention as a box office draw and has only flirted with movie star status but it's her own fault if you ask me. Too often, it seems like she settles for low budget projects but hopefully this role will help her become more noticeable. Regardless of if she survives or not.
Saw V is scheduled to hit theaters October 24th, 2008
Amerie Promo Pics
I don't really know what happened to Amerie but, she's kind of gotten lost in all these R&B songstresses that are out. Bear in mind, she's never really gained notoriety either and has mostly been looked over but these promo pics are probably from an upcoming album of hers. Still, I think she's exceptionally talented so hopefully this album will push her more into the limelight.
Ashanti: The Declaration Album Cover
From what I've been reading, a lot of people are saying that Ashanti comes off kind of "Beyoncé-ish" on this album cover for The Declaration. In a way, I can kind of see what they mean but, really, there's no comparison between the two. As much as Ashanti would love to be Beyoncé, I just don't see her ever reaching that level of success. Don't get me wrong, I love Ashanti the way she is so, as long as she continues to focus on her, then I think she'll be fine.

Forgetting Sarah Marshall
At first, Forgetting Sarah Marshall plays like a series of short vignettes that have just been thrown together but once things settle in, the story is actually pretty good. Peter (Jason Segel) is heartbroken after being dumped by his television star girlfriend, Sarah Marshall (Kristen Bell), so in hopes of getting things off his mind, he heads to Hawaii to relax. Unknowingly, Sarah has the same idea so when the two cross paths it makes for an awkward moment but introduces Peter, and the audience, to her new British-rocker boyfriend, Aldous Snow (Russell Brand). Relatively new to the American audience, Russell Brand’s portrayal of Aldous is spot on and even steals the show with some of the more funnier moments. One in particular has to do with a "competitive sex scene" but you just have to see it for yourself to understand what I mean.
As far as the rest of the template is concerned, Peter is understandably bothered by he fact that his ex is 1)in Hawaii and 2)dating another guy so quickly but is able to find comfort from a hotel clerk named Rachel (Mila Kunis). The two naturally hit it off and from there, it becomes a story of love and all its winding twists and turns. Throw in a few laughs and what you have is “the perfect date movie for guys”. Overall, I’d say the movie has all the elements SuperBad, The 40-Year Old Virgin, and Knocked Up all had but, most importantly, it has heart. Not so much that it comes off as corny but just enough that I applaud the writers and directors for finding the right balance. I mean, Jason Segel’s portrayal of Peter as a pathetic, punch drunk love loser is kind of endearing but one thing’s for sure. Unlike the title, Forgetting Sarah Marshall is one laugh out loud riot that moviegoers will not soon forget.

Raven-Symoné JET Magazine Cover
What can I say? I absolutely love Raven-Symoné so I just had to post this once I found the time. As you can see, Miss Raven-Symoné is gracing the latest cover of JET Magazine and I must say that this looks pretty classy. It's sort of reminiscent of the Alicia Keys Blender pics I posted some time ago but all that aside, I can't wait to read this article about her. JET isn't really my kind of magazine but, nonetheless, I'll give it a read. Besides, for me, it will be well worth it.

Gnarls Barkley/N.E.R.D. Source Magazine Covers
The Source Magazine hasn't really been relevant in quite some time but I'm feelin' the latest cover spread featuring Gnarls Barkley and N.E.R.D. I just so happen to be a fan of both groups so this is a real good look for them both. Gnarls Barkley's new album, The Odd Couple, is a diamond in the rough as far as I'm concerned but peep the new single from N.E.R.D. It's called "Everybody Nose" and while it's not really for the mainstream, fans of N.E.R.D. will be pleased and last I checked...that's all that really matters.

Rich Boy: Bigger Than The Mayor [Mixtape]
Ok, maybe I’m hyping this mixtape up to be bigger than what it really is but Rich Boy has really been impressing me lately. I first caught wind of this project through a track I downloaded called “Monsta” and ever since, I’ve been eager to hear more. Now that I have…I’m still impressed but only marginally. You see, I’m not really much of a fan of his but I will give credit where credit is due. Songs like “Ghetto Rich” and “Lost Girls” off his self-titled debut show that he’s capable of spittin’ politics but then on the other side, his mush mouthed flow makes it hard to understand. Me personally, I chalk it up as a character defect but, to each his own. Rich Boy is one of the most relevant M.C.’s and if given time and the right guidance, his impact could be much greater.
Still, that wouldn’t save this mixtape but there’s not really much wrong with it either. I’m just not a fan of "Trap Muzik", however, I do like anything that bangs heavy. As long as it sounds right in the car then I’m all for it so from that standpoint, Rich Boy delivers a solid collection of material to ride to. Sure, you may not be able to understand what he’s saying but he’s no different than any other rapper.
Bravado and swagger are both on display so though the interpretation is hard to make out, the message is still the same. That being said, I wouldn’t recommend this mixtape from a journalistic point of view but I still think it’s something that needs to be heard. Being from Alabama, not too many people have made it out like Rich Boy so despite his flaws, I respect what he’s doing and who am I to say differently? Up and coming rappers take note, class is now in session.
Mariah Carey: E=MC²
For the most part, my infatuation with Mariah has less to do with her singing and more with how she looks. As shallow as that may seem, I stand behind my stance but one thing I can’t deny is that Mariah puts out quality music. So much of her material has a “realness” to it and although people tend to put a label on her diva like stature, Mariah has remained unquestionably consistent. So many other artists fade over time but Mariah is clearly representative of a rare breed.
So, with all that said, all this adds up to what? E=MC² is basically a continuation of The Emancipation of Mimi but it’s not like that’s a bad thing. I thoroughly enjoyed The Emancipation for what it was and the impact that album had was tremendous. Mariah’s career was in peril and to have such a huge following behind that album was imperative. This time around, however, I think it’ll be a little different but out of all the divas that have released albums in the past few months (i.e. Janet, Mary J. Blige), I think E=MC² will stand out the most. Call it a biased opinion but as much as I try to be impartial, I just can’t. Mariah just has a much wider fan base and, as we all know, that entails more outlets for airplay.
Speaking of airplay, this new album is on point and contains plenty of material for Mariah to choose from, as far as singles are concerned. Me myself, I hated the dreadfully, awful “Touch My Body” but dug the T-Pain assisted “Migrate”. While not an official single, T-Pain and his vocoder are at there best and even Mariah jumps in on this addictive new craze. Other standout tracks include “Side Effects” featuring Young Jeezy and the emotionally driven “Bye Bye”, the latter, in which, deals with the heartache of losing a loved one.
Overall, the album is solid all around but it still lacks that “umph” from it’s predecessor. While financially it will be a success, I think Mariah will best be remembered for her inaugural emancipation but then again, since when do sequels ever live up to the original? Unfortunately, E=MC² continues that trend and although this album is good, it’s just not worth revisiting somewhere we’ve already been. Plain and simple.
Street Kings
As puzzling as it may seem, I knew going in not to expect much from Street Kings but I guess it was all the damn previews that had me wanting to see this movie. Besides, you would think that with such a long list of great actors being aboard, there’s no way this film could fail. Unfortunately, 80+ minutes later and $7.00 poorer, I beg to differ.
It’s not so much the fact that this is a bad movie, but it’s more so frustrating with how this film was set up structurally. For what it’s worth, Street Kings is gritty and pulls no punches when it comes to “keeping it authentic” but if you’ve seen one film from this genre, then you’ve pretty much seen them all. Convoluted plot twists and crooked cops go hand-in-hand, of course, and with Street Kings, it’s no different. I’ll admit, however, a few moments of the film gives glimmers of hope but it would take something short of a miracle to save this picture and I’m sure our Lord & Savior has more important matters to deal with. That being said, words can’t describe how disappointed I am with this movie but still, I digress.
So what’s it all about? I’m sure a lot of you are scratching your heads, wondering when this review will get into the plot details but for all extensive purposes, I’ve decided not to divulge any of that information. Not because I don’t want to but because getting into it all would be complicated and the last thing I want to do is jog my memory for what this shit was about. Believe me, it’s not worth the price of admission and plays more as a video rental but I must say that the only good thing I could walk away with is witnessing the evolution of the rapper Common as an actor. I loved him in Smokin' Aces and I loved him here but to only have in one scene is a waste of his talent. It just goes to show that Hollywood and Hip-Hop are one in the same and when the two meet, great things can happen. Well…at least in some cases.
All that said, the performances were sub par at best but I really dug Forest Whitaker in this movie. Ever since Last King of Scotland, Whitaker has taken each of his subsequent roles higher than the screenwriter could’ve ever imagined; and although Street Kings suffers from a bad script, Forest makes perfect use of what he‘s been given. Therefore, thanks in part to the acting of Forest Whitaker and to see a glimmer of potential from Common, I’m giving this movie a pretty fair rating as compared to what it could’ve been. So, see this movie at your own risk, but if you’re not pleased, don’t say I didn’t warn you.

Robin Thicke to Continue His Evolution With Something Else
Just being real, the success Robin Thicke has been having is long overdue. Nobody deserves it more, in my opinion, so I’m glad to see the fruits of his labor come to fruition. That being said, I, like many others, am anxious to hear what direction he’ll go with this new album but I’m sure it won’t stray far from his last. So much R&B these days seems syrupy but Thicke’s melodic approach can be likened to a perfect equilibrium.
As far as details are concerned, not much is known about the album except that the tentative title is Something Else. Going along with that, early reports suggest that the first single could possibly be a track called “Magic” but both the title and single are subject to change. Regardless, Robin Thicke can do no wrong in my eyes and as long as he doesn’t do anything drastic, the resurgence of contemporary radio will live on.

Bobby Valentino Leaves DTP/Def Jam
Now, while this is far from being 100% confirmed, I find it hard to believe because Bobby V. is the only other DTP artist that actually sold outside of Ludacris. He's pretty much one of the primary investors of the label so to hear about this is news to me. Anyway, the decision to part ways comes three weeks before his Come With Me EP is scheduled to drop but not much else is known about the future of his upcoming album, Underground Love. As for the following, here's the recent remarks Bobby V. made via an interview and it explains his decision to leave.

The Game/Ice Cube XXL Magazine Covers
I guess XXL is keeping with a West Coast theme because last month, Snoop Dogg was given the honor of gracing the cover. While I like these more, I think XXL chose two of the best out West to represent so I'm looking forward to picking up the new issue when it hits the stands later this month.
In related news, has anyone heard The Game's new song "Big Dreams" off his upcoming, 3rd album L.A.X.? The song is crazy, to put it mildly, but I'd expect nothing less from Mr. Black Wallstreet himself. I've enjoyed his last two albums so his 3rd should be great also. As for Ice Cube, his new song "Gangsta Rap Made Me Do It" is pretty good too. I like it because it's political and sends shots at those who blame music for everything so big ups to the homey Ice Cube. ...Just don't make anymore Are We There/Done Yet's.

Rumor: A Foxy Brown Reality Show in the Works?
Scheduled to drop sometime later next month, Brooklyn Don Diva will be Foxy's first outing without the backing of long time label Def Jam and her first with Koch Records. Featuring rumored production from the likes of Swiss Beatz and Kanye West, Foxy seems poised to stake claim once again as the illest female M.C. but it seems like all of her competition is either being locked up or too preoccupied with unnecessary plastic surgery. Me personally, I'll never understand it but a Foxy reality show may be pretty decent. Lil' Kim's wasn't bad but what do you expect? VH1 just doesn't care anymore about substance and would rather go all in for ratings. As long as people watch, the more bullshit they'll spit out. Hopefully that won't be the case but until this is confirmed as factual, I wouldn't hold my breath.

Introducing...Teyana Taylor
Being co-signed by one of Hip-Hop’s biggest producers is quite an acknowledgement but, quite frankly, who would dare question the genius of Pharrell Williams? Far be it from me but Pharrell has a unique thought process that can only come out of left field. His ear for talent is second to none and with Teyana Taylor, her formal introduction to the world, From A Planet Called Harlem, is sure to be quite interesting to say the least. I’m definitely interested to see what Miss Taylor has to offer but if it’s anything like her lead single “Google Me” then I’m kind of second guessing whether or not I’d still be interested. Don’t get me wrong, I’m a huge fan of alternative music but Teyana’s style may be a little too much for my tastes.
Not that it matters, one person’s opinion doesn’t make much of a difference, but Teyana’s résumé speaks for itself. Not only is she one of the originators of the Chicken Noodle Soup dance but how many people can say that they choreographed for Beyonce? Not many, let alone someone who’s only 16, but for further confirmation, peep Jay-Z’s “Blue Magic” clip. The big haired girl dancing is none other than…you guessed it…Teyana, herself.
All in all, Teyana is clearly an artist to watch in ‘08 and only time will tell how she will be received. My first impression is that she will go over well with kids her age but will suffer financially because she’s not really marketable for mainstream. Again, only time will tell but if Teyana is as fresh as a pair of Ice Cream sneakers, Pharrell will have one more successful business venture. Thanks in part to the self-proclaimed, teen president Teyana Taylor.
