Bow Wow | The Green Light [Mixtape]

Bow Wow signed with Cash Money Records sometime late last week and, personally, I feel like it's the best move he could have made for his [somewhat] stagnant career. His latest album, New Jack City, wasn't what I thought it was going to be but, for what it was, I thought it served its purpose in transitioning Bow towards a more mature audience.

That being said, I'm curious to see what comes of this new business relationship he now has with Cash Money because a lot of artists over there rarely get a chance to shine outside of Birdman & Lil' Wayne. Drake being the only exception, of course.

For that reason alone, I could see why a lot of people would consider this a "dumb" move on Bow's part; but, in the end, the only thing that really matters is the music. Nothing else. Sure, Bow may not have the flashy catalog of "Hip-Hop quotables", but potential trumps everything, in my opinion, and Bow has everything he needs in front of him to elevate himself to that ever elusive level of elite.

Gabrielle Union Covers Essence Magazine

I had to do a double take almost when I pulled this latest issue of Essence magazine out of my mailbox...simply because this looks nothing like the Gabrielle Union I know. Either she's on that same shit Michael Jackson was on or somebody over @ Essence got a little too creative with the photo shop. You tell me.

Either way, Gabrielle Union has always struck me as this actress with all the talent in the world but, for some reason, she never maximizes her potential. All she does are these low budget, BET Blackbuster movies with Morris Chestnut and that kind of thing can get you typecast real quick.

Hopefully she smartens up while she still has the looks to pull it off but, if not, at least we still have people like Taraji P. Henson that are actually stepping out and exploring Hollywood outside of the BET audience.

Usher Covers Uptown Mag's 5th Anniversary Issue

The thing I don't get about Usher is how unfazed he seems to be whenever it comes to super stardom. Any other artist would be subdued by the "flashing lights" of Hollywood and milk it for all it's worth, but Usher seems to have always been humbled by his success more than anything.

Not that it's a bad thing...I applaud him for not getting caught up in his own "hype", but dare I say he's reached the pinnacle of his career?

Here I Stand was sub par when compared to his Confessions album and I blame it on his marriage to Tameka. Everything he went through with her took away his focus, in my opinion, and you could clearly tell in his music. Something about it was missing and here's to hoping that he can recreate that magic once again now that he's hard at work on this follow up project entitled, "Monster".

In the meantime, however, Usher is featured on the cover of Uptown's 5th Anniversary Issue so be sure to pick up a copy whenever it hits newsstands here shortly.

Drake Covers Fader Magazine

Sure enough, the anticipation for Drake's debut album, Thank Me Later, was only helped by the commercial success of "Best I Ever Had" at urban radio; but the thing I don't get is how people can say this guy is overrated.

Aside from being Lil' Wayne's protege, Drizzy 'Drake' Rogers has made quite a buzz for himself with the release of his mixtapes; so, public opinion aside, it would only seem fair to give credit where credit is due.

No other up and coming artist has had this much "hype" surrounding their debut album and already people are blogging about how he'll crumble under the pressure.

Whether he will or not remains to be seen, but one thing I do know is that Drake has everything he needs to be a success. Not only does he have the voice, charisma, and bravado; but substance, over all, is the most important characteristic to have nowadays and Drake is more of a breath of fresh air as compared to everybody else that seems content on being average.

Not to mention, he already has a [well] built in fan base. Either way he could conceivably be heralded as the G.O.A.T. when it comes to rookie M.C.'s but, before I get too far ahead of myself, how about we see how well-received Thank Me Later is when it drops this coming Valentine's Day.

Then, and only then, will I reserve judgment of my own; but, in the meantime, be sure to check for Drake as he is featured on the cover of this month's Fader.

Funny People

The success Judd Apatow has had ever since the release of The 40-Year-Old Virgin has been enough to garner him a pass when it comes to the many projects he has since executive produced along the way; but it's his own unique blend of "raunchy dramedy" that seems to draw people into his work.

Just look at the critical acclaim that came with, again, The 40-Year-Old Virgin and Knocked Up. While both films featured over-the-top subject matter, the depth of Apatow's creative writing allowed viewers to see the lighthearted side of what he was trying to get across on screen and with Funny People, Apatow may have just delivered his most grown up film to date.

But at what costs? To say that many people may be turned off by what Funny People actually is too much of a blanketed statement but, still, that should not take away from how brilliantly creative this movie really is. Instead, Apatow, who has always had a high, character driven approach to his films, crafts yet another ingenuous story around such flawed characters and the end result on screen is damn near comedic gold.

Especially when considering all the talent that was assembled to make this film. The always funny Seth Rogen is great here as George's assistant, Ira; but what I found even more intriguing was the chemistry of all the lesser known actors/comedians with one another. Jason Schwartzman, Jonah Hill, Aubrey Plaza, and Leslie Mann all compliment Adam and Seth really well and, again, I guess that all goes back to the depth that Judd Apatow has as a writer/director. Clearly his sense of direction rubs off on everybody involved and, last I checked, that kind of thing makes for a great movie. Not to mention, some pretty great improv.

Which, I'm sure a lot of the film turned out to be as compared to what was actually scripted beforehand. That kind of thing is routine for an Apatow film but here, especially, it works really well for the "heavy" subplot that lies at the heart of the story.

Now, while I won't give anything away, what I will say is that Funny People will be hit or miss for some people. It's long running time does become a distraction at times but, in the grand scheme of things, the one thing this film does prove is that laughter really is the best medicine. Just ask George Simmons.

'Married To The MOB' Ad Campaign Featuring Teyana Taylor

Singer/Rapper Teyana Taylor was chosen to be the face of Married To The MOB's "Smell Like Teen Spirit" collection (shot by Brooke Niper) and I think it [already] goes without saying as to how I feel about Teyana. She's an absolute favorite of mine and what I find interesting is how she manages to stay relevant without having put an album out. Obviously, opportunities like this make that a possibility but, still, her debut album (From A Planet Called Harlem) should've been here by now! Here's to hoping it sees the light of day here shortly but, in the meantime, ladies be sure to check for MOB apparel courtesy of their website.

¤ Remember Michael Jackson's Moonwalker? ¤

All this talk about Michael Jackson in the previous post below really got me to thinking about the influence he had on music and it's a shame that he's no longer among us. Truth be told, I'm a huge fan of the music he left behind; but, even more so, of the film he left as well.

Not many people remember this video anthology, of sorts, encompassed as Michael Jackson's Moonwalker; but I, myself, remember this as if it were just yesterday.

I swear, you couldn't tell me another movie existed as much as I watched it and, looking back, it's not like it was any good either. It's just that, at that time, I WAS Michael Jackson and, in any way I could, I would embody everything he was. Signature glove and all.

It's funny now thinking about it all and how obsessed I was with this man, but I think we all were enamored with his larger than life persona. We never got enough of him as an entertainer and I guess that's why it hurt so much to hear of his passing. He truly was the global icon that everybody made him out to be and, aside from a few character defects, his legacy will ultimately be that of the King of Pop. | + R.I.P Michael Jackson+ |

¤ Vinyl Pop ¤

It didn't dawn on me until the death of Michael Jackson that the collection of old vinyl records my mom had down in the den could possibly be worth something...and, just my luck, she didn't happen to have anything by the late great King of Pop. Just Jermaine.

Now, as frustrating as that was, I remained dilligent in digging through the tons of records she did have and I came across a few keepers. The Rick James one to the left is definitely one I'll keep for myself...along with the Janet Jackson Control album, a few Prince records, and one by New Edition.

Not a bad assortment if you ask me; however, the two vinyl's I really wanted was Purple Rain by Prince and Thriller by Michael Jackson. Somehow, my mom had neither and the thing I don't get is how, for someone that grew up in the 80's, she could have not owned at least one of those!

It just didn't make sense and the more and more I tried to justify it, the more frustrated I became. But, trust me, things have calmed down since. I'm no longer big on vinyl records anymore and, I figure, while it would have been nice to have owned a vinyl of either Purple Rain/Thriller; at least my mom and I were able to connect momentarily, if not briefly. Those kind of moments are what Hallmark cards are made of and, you know, I wouldn't trade that for anything in the world.

Well...at least almost anything...*cough* Purple Rain or Thriller on vinyl *cough*

This may just be a prime example of an over usage of photo shop, but it's not like I'm complaining or anything like that. If anything, I'm already aware that girls like this don't exist; and if they do, I have yet to see one that looks as good in person as the ones I come across airbrushed on the various websites I surf through [almost] on a daily basis.

But does that make it anymore right to exploit it on my very own website? Of course, not. But, then again, it is my website and I can post whatever the hell I want.

Anyway, Maliah Michele has been doing her thing for quite some time now and she always delivers when it comes to the pictorials. This latest issue of Smooth being no different. One thing I love about Complex is that they always have some dope cover art. The Kid Cudi cover I posted yesterday was just as ill as this one featuring Keri Hilson and I just may have to look into subscribing...especially when considering that a lot of my favorite magazines are starting to fold. Hopefully Complex won't be the next magazine to get the axe but, with this economy, there's just no telling.

As for this latest issue itself, Keri being on the cover is a real good look for her and I think it's nice to see her finally get the exposure she deserves. Excuse me for sounding like a broken record, but all the years she spent ghostwriting for other artists was not only well worth it, but it also allowed her the opportunity to better mold her craft as a songwriter.

An even exchange if you will. Nonetheless, Keri deserves everything she's worked hard for and the more publications she graces, the more in tune people will become towards her as an artist. Not just one starving for attention either like some of these other R&B songstresses, but one [actually] doing it for all the right reasons.

NFL: Giants and QB Eli Manning Agree to 6-year, $97.5M Extension

What in the hell has Eli Manning done to deserve a contract worth $97.5M(of which, $35M is guaranteed)? Sure, he may have won a Super Bowl on pure luck, but last season was a microcosm of his entire career and the thing I don't get is how a well run organization like the NY Giants could pay somebody for mediocrity.

It just doesn't make sense and, besides, we all saw what happend when Eli's safety net in Plaxico Burress was taken away from him. He became a less than average quarterback and his team's struggles reflected that when they were bounced in the divisional playoffs against the Philadelphia Eagles last year.

But to each's own, I suppose. The NY Giants (as an organization) have a much better handle on these kind of things than I do; and if they feel like Eli is worth it, who am I to say different? He did lead them to an improbable Super Bowl and, being their franchise player, I guess it makes sense to lock him up now while they still can. All I'm saying is the guy isn't worth it and for Giants fans that say otherwise, wake me up when Eli wins another ring.

Jeremih | Self-Titled

Newcomer Jeremih should ask fellow R&B crooner J. Holiday how important a second single is, because outside of "Birthday Sex" his self-titled debut has very little to offer. Sure, one could understand his label wanting to capitalize on the success that it was having [currently] on the radio; but maybe if they stopped to think for a minute or two, they would realize that [sometimes] rushing an album creates more one hit wonders than it does careers.

Still, even with that being the current climate of the music industry, it's hard to find a solid album worth buying nowadays; let alone any of substance, and I guess that's the biggest problem I have with Jeremih's debut. Not only is it typical but, for it to be self-titled, it never allows the listener to get to know Jeremih for who he is. Instead, the primary focus seemed to have been elsewhere and songs like "That Body", "Runaway", and "Jumpin" are unpolished enough to prove that point.

But not all is lost, however. A few stand out tracks such as "Hatin' On Me", "Imma Star (Everywhere We Are)" and "My Ride" will be enough to milk this album for all its worth; but I doubt it will be enough to garner any interest in a follow up project from Jeremih. A more balanced effort would've certainly ensured that to be a possibility, but that "one-hit wonder" label seems to be almost a given.

Which is sad when you think about it. A lot of unsigned artists would kill to be in the position that Jeremih is in and for him to put out such a lackluster piece of work is something I just can't understand. Especially when considering this is a new artist making his respective debut! If anything, the passion, drive, and motivation should still be present; but when it's not, it really makes you wonder how complacent the music industry has become. Have ringtone sales become that much more important than album sales? Unfortunately they have and what's even more glaring is that a lot of these artists are killing their careers before they even begin. Jeremih now being one of 'em.

Taraji P. Henson Covers Monarch

Taraji P. Henson is a talented actress that is oftentimes overlooked because of her body of work, but I think her role in The Curious Case of Benjamin Button opened a lot of people's eyes.

Sure, it would've been nice had the Academy awarded her for such a performance; but leave it to the BET Awards to be the only award show to reward her for a job well done.

Don't get me wrong. I'm happy BET was gracious enough to recognize Taraji FINALLY, but I think this reflects bad on the Academy. Taraji outright deserved that award for Best Supporting Actress and anybody that says otherwise is just being unreasonable.

Truth be told, she's been great ever since Baby Boy as far as I'm concerned; and if Benjamin Button was her best performance thus far, just imagine where things could go from here.

An inquisitive thought if ever there was one, I mind you, but what's even more rewarding is the added attention Taraji has been getting ever since Benjamin Button was released. The magazine covers, interviews, etc. have been long overdue in my opinion; but with people finally starting to take notice, at least her long road to get here can finally be validated. Wouldn't you agree?

Maybe it's just me, but something about Teyana Taylor drives me crazy and the fucked up thing is...she's 4 years younger than me! I know, I know. Nothing will ever happen between us and I get that, but just the idea of it happening is enough for me. As desperate as that sounds.

Kid Cudi Covers Complex

Kid Cudi is one of the more "down to earth" artists that I happen to be a fan of, but sometimes his music is a little too far out there. Even for my tastes. Be that as it may, he still remains a dope artist in my eyes and the more music of his that I discover, the more in tune I become with what exactly he's trying to say.

Don't get me wrong, it's not like I understand it all. If anything, I'm more confused afterward than I was before I even listened. But, still, I think it's pretty cool how he doesn't conform for his fan base. Instead, he simply makes music for himself and could care less if anybody else feels it or not. That kind of mindset will get him far in this industry and I guarantee you that's why a lot of people are starting to get behind him. I, myself, included.

Kobe Bryant Covers Slam Magazine

Kobe Bryant may have finally been vindicated in a lot of people's eyes by winning his 4th championship ring, but I just can't give credit where credit is due. Something about Kobe has always just rubbed me the wrong way and for me to sit here and say that he deserved it would be a lie on my behalf.

Instead, what I will say is that Kobe Bryant and the Lakers were pretty much handed an NBA championship this year by the Orlando Magic and I just don't see them getting back to the finals next year. Even with the addition of Ron Artest.

If so, I expect the Boston Celtics or Cleveland Cavaliers to give them a much more physical match-up; while, at the same time, be able to create the mismatches that the Orlando Magic obviously couldn't...

Jay-Z | Blueprint 3 Album Cover

Jay-Z is really making a strong statement. Not just with his Death of Autotune anthem, but with the cover of his upcoming album, The Blueprint 3, as well.

As you can see, the simplistic roman numeral three over instruments of music is a creative concept in itself; but as for what it represents...I thought Jay's explanation was pretty on point.

"These things are like the forgotten pieces in hip-hop," Hov explained. "It's still about music. It's not about radio, making gimmicks — it's still about making music. Those things are piled in the corner. These are the forgotten things about music. It's still about music. It's not about radio, it's not about making gimmicks, it's about music. The three stripes that everybody is asking about is made from the original [number] three. The first three they made on the wall was someone carving. If you look at [the number] 3, all they did was connect lines. The whole thing about this album, how I approached it, is that I wanted to make a new classic to start that all over again — to go back to making classic albums like the ones we grew up listening to."

¤ And You Thought Video Killed The Radio Star ¤

Since when was it socially acceptable to play a song about "oral sex" on the radio? Probably around the same time that Lil' Jon & The Eastside Boyz flooded the airwaves with "Get Low" and their infamous "aahh skeet skeet" line I suppose; but Plies' new song "Becky" takes things to an all time low. Not so much to the point that I'm offended but, more so, to the point that I'm concerned. Allow me to explain.

I absolutely despise the radio for those that care to know but it's kind of hard to ignore when you're driving. Especially when your ipod freezes up and the only alternative you have IS the radio. As you can tell, I've had this problem a time or two; but it never really bothered me until the other day. For whatever reason, my ipod seems to have a mind of its own at times and I guess divine intervention stepped in and said I just had to hear this song. Which I did and all I could think was, "how is this on the radio?"

That's all I could think as I was listening and what I don't get is how an educated guy like Plies (watch one of his interviews if you don't believe me) can dumb himself down to make music like this? I get that he has a fan base and all, but what you like/do behind closed doors is your own business. No need to make a song about it. Let alone put it out as a lead single to gauge interest for your album. That kind of shit makes no sense whatsoever and the risks in doing so seem greater than the reward.

I mean, think about it, as much as kids emulate what they already see/hear; why continue to add fuel to the fire? That's exactly what Plies is doing here in my opinion and I fear the more desensitized we become as a society, the more acceptable behavior like this will become a norm.

But perhaps we may have already reached that point. Just this morning I was on the AllHipHop.com message board and it was sickening almost to see grown ass men loathing over this "thick" 16-year old girl. All the degrading, nasty comments about what they would do to her was enough to make anybody uncomfortable and I guess that's why I'm trying to shed light on the subject via this blog.

In no way am I saying that music is to blame; but I will say is that it has some influence. Turn on BET if you don't believe me. We live in a world of misogynistic vantage points that are oftentimes taken out of context, but what else would you expect when all we see are girls in damn near nothing, shaking their asses in these videos?

Definitely not a positive one and the thing I don't get is how people don't understand how kids could see this and think it's perfectly fine. At some point in time we have to draw a line as far as what is considered decent; and last I checked, how "anatomically accurate" you are should not define you. It just shouldn't. Real talk!

But to sit here and say that it doesn't would be a lie on my behalf. The fact of the matter is that music media has conditioned us to think this way and until we do otherwise, "Becky" and everything that comes along with it will continue to be a problem.

...And you thought video killed the radio star.

Finally. After months of everyone bumping Drake’s “Best I Ever Had”—sweat pants, hair-tied, chillin’ with no makeup on—the biggest song in the country finally gets a video. A video directed by Complex homie Kanye West, no less. And it couldn’t have come at a more perfect time. This past week, the Toronto native’s smash single rocketed up 24 spots to #3 on the Billboard charts, right as he solidified his much gossiped-about record deal.

Just before premiering the highly anticipated video Drake stopped by the Complex office to discuss working with Kanye, the truth about his new deal, his handicapped experience at the 2009 BET Awards and his thoughts on World Star Hip Hop’s newfound love of Degrassi…

Interview By Damien Scott

Complex: Everyone’s been waiting on this video. Can you take us through the making of it?

Drake: Yeah. The video is directed by Kanye West. Basically we decided, as opposed to taking ourselves super serious, we just wanted to have some fun with it. Myself, being a young man, a young single man at that, I kind of wanted to be real about the way I function with women at this current point in my life. Which is, I don’t have one woman that I call my girl. There’s different girls in my life that play different roles and I see at different times, but collectively they kind of make up the roster of happiness for me [Laughs].

Complex: Understandable. So what’s the concept?

Drake: The concept of the video is, I’m a coach at a high school and the girls of my life are all on my high school basketball team. Throughout the video you see us prepping for this big championship game, and my team ends up losing. You see the looks on their faces at the end of the video, but the moral of the story, I guess, is win or lose, you can still be the best to somebody. When women see the video and see all the breast and ass, hopefully they don’t take offense. Hopefully they see the real meaning.

Complex: Well, now they’ll know.

Drake: [Laughs.] Now they’ll know.

Complex: Kanye is known as kind of a control freak. How was it working with him on set with him directing?

Drake: Me and Kanye have a great eye to eye. I can’t speak for anybody else, but I would give Kanye the utmost credit for actually being one of the most understanding creative people that I have worked with. I think me and Kanye have mutual respect for each another and I listen to what he has to say regardless, ’cause I trust him. I don’t really fight his suggestions [Laughs.] But he was great. It was a long day and I just thank him for dedicating the time he dedicated. He was great.

Complex: Speaking of basketball, you tore your ACL playing basketball, right?

Drake: Yes sir. It was intense casual, I guess [Laughs]. It was just a regular pick up game and I just took the wrong step.

Complex: Damn, that’s horrible. At the BET Awards this past Sunday, everyone was shocked to see you sitting on a stool. Did you ever think to yourself, Maybe I shouldn’t perform?

Drake: That, actually—to be honest—was a terrible idea that I’ll never do to myself again. [Laughs] But I was being pressed from different areas to perform, and I think what really happened at the BET Awards is with the passing of Mike, the climate really changed, as far as the award show goes. I don’t think it called for us to perform “Every Girl” and “Always Strapped,” and I think it was an award show filled with tributes and music and these genuine heartfelt speeches. And to sort of climax out of a very tongue-in-cheek point, and then people misconstruing Wayne’s daughters and her friends coming out on stage…

Complex: Yeah, it really was an awkward moment.

Drake: Yeah, it was just timed very poorly and it definitely wasn’t planned like that, but with that being said, it is what is. I believe in Wayne and myself and it’s nothing we can’t bounce back from. To anyone who was offended, my personal apologies, it wasn’t intended to offend anybody.

Complex: Watching it at home, the BET Awards seemed to be a mess. Did it seem that way in person?

Drake: Well, I can only speak for my portion of it. I had asked for something very specific for my performance and none of those were met, as far as production value, so…

Complex: That’s BET for you…

Drake: I understood my situation, as far as sitting in one place, and figured there was a way to make it interesting. But when I looked around and noticed that none of that was going on [laughs], I kind of just realized that it was going to be a loss for me. But at the end of the day, it is what it is.

Complex: How did you feel when you heard Mike passed?

Drake : Shocking. Because Michael is just one of those people that you just kind of expect to always be there—he’s Michael Jackson. He’s like one of those guys you never think about…

Complex: …as a real person?

Drake: Yeah. I just never thought Mike could die. And it’s tragic. I know before this tour, a lot of people never had the opportunity to see Mike perform. It’s unfortunate and I always find it interesting to see when people pass away and people find this new found love for the person

Complex: Yeah, a lot of people were saying if Mike never passed, a lot of the comedians would have still gone on making jokes and what not.

Drake: Yeah, you know it’s just…it’s a very interesting thing when somebody passes away and people sort of…the world loves Michael Jackson, I just think that there are certain people who use it as an opportunity to talk more. With that being said, I always appreciated what Mike did and my condolences go out to Mike’s family.

Complex: For real. Going back to your music, “Best I Ever Had” jumped to #3 on the Billboard charts. And then you announced yesterday that you signed your deal with Universal…

Drake: Nah…I definitely want to clear this up, I didn’t sign to Universal. I’m actually signed to… a lot of people were telling me, “Oh, you should do it independent.” I’m actually 100% independent. I signed to Cortez Bryant and G. Roberson, my managers, so I signed a joint venture between Aspire Music Group, which is them, and Young Money. So the only part that Universal plays is P&D [pressing and distribution]. I’m not a Universal artist. I’m signed to myself.

Complex: What does Young Money bring to the table?

Drake: Since the beginning of this, Lil’ Wayne has always put himself out there on behalf of me, from spitting my verse at the VMAs, to jumping on the songs that I needed him on and always promoting me. Right now it’s more about building up Young Money, as opposed to what Young Money brings to the table at this point. Obviously, what Young Money brings to the table is Lil’ Wayne. He’s a powerhouse and I felt it was only fair to stay loyal. I thought it was only fair for him to get that look and I wanted the YM logo on the album and to make sure that he knows that I don’t take what he did for me for granted.

Complex: You were entertaining other offers from Atlantic and Interscope, right?

Drake: I can definitely say that I wanted to be over at Interscope for a while, but it wouldn’t allow me to work with Wayne the way that I wanted to work with Wayne. I had to make a sacrifice. But with that being said, if we sell some records and people actually see how the record deal breaks down… Somebody told me they saw my deal the other day and they said it was one of the worst record deals in history [for] the label. That’s a good thing for me. I own everything, I have 100% creative control, I own all my masters, everything. I’m blessed to be in that situation. If we sell some records, I think we’ll just add to the historic pace that this has been going at.

Complex: There was a feeling that if you didn’t sign to a major label, that would signal the demise of the record industry.

Drake: I think that it all depends on the success on the project. I can have this conversation with you and tell you the impact I think it may have, especially when the details of the deal get out. But it’s all dependent on what I do. I first have to make the right album that will sell some records. With that being said, I definitely think it could cause a bit of a shift if we find a way to sell a million records.

Complex: What made you want to strive to stay independent?

Drake: Since I started, I’ve always been giving my music away for free…I’ve always kind of done it for the people, you know? So I just want them to still have some attachment to this project. I don’t want to lose my fans completely because they support me in a way that’s more than just listening to my music. They support me like we’re friends. They support me like they have emotions invested in it. So I want there to be a challenge to it, so when it drops, they’re looking at the numbers, they’re maybe even clicking it twice on iTunes just to prove a point. I want it to be fun, man. This shit is just not exciting if it’s so straight forward like, “I’m putting a record out, go to the store and buy it” and there’s so many people behind it, it has nothing to do with me. You know? It’s like, fuck it, let’s just have fun, let’s see if we can shake up the world, let’s see if we can fuck with the system. I just figure it’d make it more interesting on the album day.

Complex: There were rumors of a $4 million bonus…

Drake: [Laughs] Where is it? Tell me where it is, I’ll go pick it up right now. I got some money. I got a little money. I’ll be alright for a couple months.

Complex: Lately there have been a couple videos on World Star Hip-Hop showing you in your Degrassi days. It doesn’t seem like your past bothers you in any regard…

Drake: I think World Star Hip-Hop thinks it bothers me. There was a time in my life when I really lashed out against World Star Hip-Hop. And it wasn’t World Star Hip-Hop the site, ’cause I’m not gonna pretend like I don’t go there every day. It was just the way people look at World Star Hip-Hop as an outlet for them to talk about shit. There are artists that I feel could be doing a lot better for themselves that go on there and kill their own careers by just talking too much, and I think that they took that personally and now all they do is air Degrassi clips of me and potential things that could embarrass me. But with me, man…the great thing about me being me in this game is that I’ve been so honest up until this point, I really have nothing to hide, I don’t fear any clip, you know? It’s out there already, everyone knows that’s my story. At the end of the day, it’s part of me, it’s my stepping stone. I’m proud of every moment thus far.

Nicki Minaj | Beam Me Up Scotty [Mixtape]

I didn't get my first real look at Nicki Minaj until last night when I was watching The Deal. Up until then I had dismissed her as just another female M.C., which she is, but there's something about Nicki that I can't quite put my finger on.

I'm not sure if it's the "unique" manner in which she raps or what. All I know is that no other female M.C. in the game right now has as much of a buzz as Nicki and that's saying a lot, especially with Lil' Kim trying her damnedest to become relevant again.

Whether she will or not remains to be seen but, for know, Nicki Minaj seems primed to make a name for herself and Lil' Wayne's Young Money is the perfect team to allow her to do so. In the meantime, Nicki's latest mixtape, Beam Me Up Scotty, is something like a problem. Do yourself a favor and check it out for yourself.

Drake | Best I Ever Had [Video]

Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen

The commercial press for Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen is [somewhat] misleading if you ask me. Not only is this film a microcosm of its stellar predecessor, but that same wonderment that came along with it seems to be replaced with a convoluted plot that extends beyond nothing more than a multitude of slow motion explosions and just another opportunity to sell more action figures.

Which is quite the reality that is Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen. Albeit ravenous fan boys will argue in its defense; the fact of the matter is that this film is just not very good. Nothing about it makes any more special than summer blockbusters of years past; and it's disappointing in a sense to see such a well established franchise such as Transformers sell its own soul for the sake of a dollar. It just doesn't make sense (literally or figuratively) and I solely place the blame on the shoulders of Michael Bay.

His vision for over-the-top action sequences has become a proverbial crutch throughout his career and, after a while, the monotony of it all starts to wear ridiculously thin. Still, it was I that praised Michael Bay for finding the perfect balance the first time around and, in watching this sequel, I could hardly get a feel for what the director was trying to get across on screen. Save for the racial undertones perhaps, Megan Fox's significant screen time was the only other thing that was obvious; and what can I say, I was just not impressed much by that either.

But in every dark cloud lies a silver lining, I suppose, and one movie will do little to tarnish Transformers as a bankable entity. Besides, the first film had a strong enough foundation to garner this film a pass; and I fully expect Michael Bay and company to right the ship the next time around. Well...at least one could only hope anyway.

The Theory of Relativity According To Cali & Prancer

Girl on girl is a wonderful thing, especially if those girls happen to be Cali & Prancer. Far be it from me, however, to assume anything here; but thank God for MediaTakeOut! It's because of them that every man's fantasy has come true (well, maybe just mine) and I think we owe them for FINALLY posting something worthy of our time.

Seriously though, I'm not surprised that Cali & Prancer have continued along with their explicit exploits; so the whole shock and awe of something like this leaking has long since worn off. Besides, this is kind of mild mannered as compared to the other celebrity "sex" scandals that have been popping up as of late and I think people need to wake up and realize a publicity stunt when they see one.

Both Cali & Prancer are fully aware of what their doing and it's a shame that it takes something like this for them to stay relevant. It just goes to show that some people can manage their 15 minutes of fame better than others and, last I checked, this road leads to nowhere.

Rihanna's "Wet" Umbrella May Actually Belong To Lavish Styles

Which would probably explain all the Rihanna sex tape rumors that have been popping up as of late. Not to mention, the salacious pics that were leaked onto the Internet a few weeks back.

Now, seeing that Rihanna hasn't directly responded to any of the aforementioned; I find it unnerving almost that people actually believed it to be her! Hell, I almost did until I remembered myself that she had a porno doppelganger; but never once did I actually believe that any of this was legit. Maybe for a moment or two, yes, but Lavish Styles has been milking her resemblance to Rihanna ever since she came onto the scene and it doesn't surprise me that she's doing so even harder now.

But, still, you have to hand it to her. The similarities between the two are only slightly mirrored by the fact that one holds a microphone for a living and the other holds a certain(*cough* cough *) part of the male anatomy. But is that any reason to scream foul? Both rely on heavy breathing and breath control when you think about it and as fucked up and underlying as that sounds, the truth could never be more stimulating. Now, how's that for irony?

Keri Hilson Wins Best New Artist @ BET Awads '09

BET actually got a few things right this year and I was more than pleased to see Keri Hilson take home the award for Best New Artist.

None of the other nominees in the category deserved it outright, in my opinion, and I see this as validation for all the hard work Keri has put in over the years.

Her debut album, In A Perfect World, was easily one of the best debuts in recent memory and it's rare to find an artist, let alone one that gained notoriety as more of a songwriter, that is able to have this much success their first time out.

If you don't believe me, just ask Ryan Leslie. He, too, is an underrated talent that is only now starting to make a name for himself; but, if given some time, his success can match that of Keri Hilson's also. Besides, his talent is too good for him not too.

But that's another blog in itself. Keri gave a very inspired performance as well on Sunday and I thought she managed to pay tribute to Michael Jackson better than some of the more well-established artists (i.e. Beyonce). Other than that, I was pleased overall with everything Keri had to offer and, who knows, maybe this award/award show will be something that ultimately pushes her career to that next level.

Sounds sort of like an A-A introduction, doesn't it? But, seriously though, I'm absolutely enamored when it comes to Chic-fil-A. Every time I go to Dothan, I try to make it a point to eat there and it makes no sense for us not to have one in Enterprise!

I mean, how "convenient" is it that we can have two pharmacy's right across from one another; yet, @ the same time, have a very limited selection when it comes to food? That shit makes no sense whatsoever and it bothers me because the closest Chic-fil-A is a tie between Dothan & Troy.

Quite the dilemma I mind you but I guess the silver lining in all this is that I plan to attend Troy in the fall...at least then I'll be able to enjoy Chic-fil-A @ my heart's discretion. I just feel like I shouldn't have to had settled in order to do so.

In spite of the fact that Ciara has an incredible album out right now entitled Fantasy Ride, I think the popular consensus towards her will always be that she doesn't have much talent outside of sex appeal.

Which isn't true. Songs like "LoveSexMagic" and "Never Ever" are evidence enough of the talent she possesses; and it's really unfair how people unjustly criticize her career. There's absolutely nothing wrong with sticking with what works and it almost makes you wonder how better off some of these other artists would be if they, too, followed that same way of thinking.

B.o.B. Vs. Bobby Ray [Mixtape]

Out of this recent XXL Freshman class, B.o.B. has the most potential to be great to me. Don't ask why. I just feel like he has more to offer than a lot of these other up and coming artists (aside from Drake) and, so far, the framework for his success has been his mixtapes. Dawn & Que's Alter Egos

I've never understood the relationship between Dawn and Que but, nevertheless, the two seem absolutely in sync with one another. That being said, that same [organic] chemistry is what makes this latest photo shoot of theirs work and I'm really curious to see what will come of Dawn's solo career.

Ever since the Danity Kane break-up she's been in limbo; along with the rest of the girls, I suppose, but Dawn has everything she needs to make it on her own. My only word of advice is that she drop Que. Dude is the definition of bi-polar and the last thing she needs is another "Aubrey" to tear her down.

Dwight Howard Chosen As Cover Athlete For NBA Live 2010

Dwight Howard may not have won an NBA Championship, but this is a good look for him to be chosen as the cover athlete for NBA Live 2010. A lot of the previous players to have graced the cover have gone on to win(if not compete for) an NBA title and with the Magic being a relatively young team, I see them contending for years to come.

It's just disappointing that things didn't work out for him this year. The Los Angeles Lakers were a much better team and regardless of what anybody says, experience played a key role in this series; especially in late game situations.

I shutter to think how much of a difference the series would've been had Courtney Lee made that lay up @ the end of game 2 or if Derek Fisher misses one of the clutch three's he hit in game 4. A few bounces of the ball here or there may have yielded a much different result but it is what it is.

In the meantime, NBA Live 2010 will be in stores this fall.
