Jennifer Hudson

In a perfect world, Jennifer Hudson would appear to be the ideal artist. Not only has she captivated the hearts and minds of fans alike but, seemingly, her long road to validation has [finally] come full circle.

Now, with her debut album finally in stores, the only question that remains is whether or not it was worth the wait? While some will argue that it wasn't, the silver lining lies within it's [chart] performance; but, quite frankly, I think it will be well received. Allow me to explain.

Getting things started, the Ne-Yo written "Spotlight" makes for a solid opening track and really suits Hudson's vocal style well. From there, "If This Isn't Love" and "Giving Myself" are equally just as good, but it's the Ludacris featured "Pocketbook" that allows Jennifer to try something a little different. Backed by an unorthodox Timbaland production, Jennifer comes off real sassy on this track and Luda's rap is, by far, the icing on the cake.

Not to be outdone, T-Pain accompanies Jennifer on the ballad "What's Wrong (Go Away)" and, here, the two display really great chemistry. Save for that annoying auto-tune effect that T-Pain loves so much, this track is a standout among many and, surprisingly, this album delivers more where that came from.

Most notably, "I'm His Only Woman" featuring Fantasia and the Polow Da Don produced "My Heart" are prime examples of that, but songs like "We Gon' Fight" and "Invisible" deserve honorable mentions as well. Then again, the whole album is on point from start to finish and, in listening, you can really tell that Hudson took her time with this. None of the tracks seem out of place (except for the inclusion of "And I Am Telling You". Everybody and their momma has heard that song, so as to why it was included on the album is beyond me) and the production is solid all around.

Therefore, overall, Jennifer Hudson's debut is an exceptional piece of work and [most] fans will be pleased with the end result. I, for one, was more impressed than I was pleased; but that's only because I've been the biggest critic of Hudson's since her days of American Idol. I never really "got" her and was quick to dismiss her as nothing more than a product of hype. Needless to say, I was wrong; so as I close this review, I guess it's only right to end this with an apology. I'm sorry, Ms. Hudson. And that's with the utmost sincerity.

Robin Thicke: Something Else

The Evolution of Robin Thicke could only be measured in album sales but, still, it’s impact at contemporary radio was widely felt. Spurred by the smooth, yet seductive, lead single “Lost Without You”, The Evolution not only established Thicke as a legitimate R&B crooner; but was even more instrumental in adding validation to his [already] burgeoning career.

Now, a seasoned veteran, Robin Thicke returns with Something Else and delivers that same familiar sound in the process. Nothing is overtly out of place and, in a sense, this album is more theatrical than its previous counterpart.

Which is a good thing. Songs like “Magic” and “Dreamworld” are harmonious to that fact, and Thicke’s ability to craft songs effortlessly is simply amazing.

Other standout tracks include “The Sweetest Love” and “You’re My Baby” but, overall, it’s the album as a whole that really sets things apart. While not as cohesive as The Evolution, Something Else still makes for a notable selection in Thicke’s catalog; but, arguably, there’s always room for improvement.

For one, Thicke tends to stay in his comfort zone and, in doing so, his growth as an artist is somewhat limited. Don’t get me wrong, it’s never been a question of whether or not the guy has talent because clearly he does; but I guess the way John Legend is stepping out from behind his piano, is exactly the same thing Robin Thicke needs to do as well. Besides, no [one] artist should be lamented, or typecast, as one that relies heavily on a “crutch”; and with this being Thicke’s third album, it’s due time for a shift towards "something else". Wouldn’t you agree?

If not, it’s not the end of the world as fans of Robin Thicke will enjoy this album just the same. I sure as hell did and could’ve cared less if it was “safe” so, by all means, I guess you could take this review as constructive criticism. Enough said.

Appetite For Destruction

Is it me, or does it seem like 50 Cent is only setting himself up for failure? His last album, Curtis, flopped big time; and, just in listening to this new lead single “Get Up” (Produced by Scott Storch), I’m thinking that this new album, Before I Self-Destruct, will be just as disastrous. Why? Well, unlike any of his previous leadoff attempts, this song has no substance whatsoever and really begs the question of whether 50 Cent has lost it.

Let me be the first to say that I, for one, thinks he has and will not even give this album the time of day. Nothing about it interests me in the least bit and I’m pretty damn sure it will fall on deaf ears. Do I care? Honestly, no and, quite frankly, I could care less either way; but to those that are fans of 50, the least I could do is be considerate, right? Wrong. 50 could go kill himself for all I care and, for putting out this bullshit, he probably should.

Let's face it. The fact that the latest G-Unit album was the most financial flop in 50 Cent's career, is all the proof in the world that the G-Unit mystique is gone. Nobody cares about these guys anymore and I purely blame it on oversaturation. 50's approach to the whole game was backwards, in my opinion, and I feel like he's paying the price for it now.

Sure, as much as I respect the guy as a business man, 50 clearly know how to market himself; but his main focus should have always been to establish G-Unit as a brand name first. Seeing that he didn't, that ship is sinking fast and, pretty soon, his G-Unit brothers will be looking to make their exit. Young Buck already made his infamous departure and, sooner or later, Lloyd Banks will too. At least, I hope. The guy is too talented to be brought down alongside 50's crumbling empire so, if he was smart, he'd jump ship [now] while he still has value.

Never one to fold, 50 will always keep an ace in the hole; so, maybe Before I Self-Destruct will play out to his advantage. While it's highly unlikely, I'm sure 50 thinks this album is the best thing since sliced bread; but, if so, I think all that Vitamin Water may have gone to his head. Either that, or those steroids are starting to have an adverse effect. You decide and tell me. All I know is, 50's appetite for destruction will be his undoing; so rather than pray on his downfall, I'd much rather sit back and watch it all unfold. Care to join me?

The Dream Preps Sophomore Effort, Love Vs. Money Slated For Release This December

With a successful debut already under his belt, it would seem only fitting that a follow-up would be eagerly anticipated. Tentatively titled Love Vs. Money, The-Dream is set to return this Winter and I, for one, can't wait. I absolutly loved Love/Hate, so best believe I'll be checking for this when it drops.

In my opinion, a lot of people sleep on The-Dream and I've never been able to understand why. His songwriting ability is unmatched, when it comes to making hits, and give or take a few minor annoyances (i.e. his tendency to say "aye" in every freakin' song), this guy is absolutely legit. For what it's worth, this new album should be his coming out party so, hopefully, people will start to take notice. If not, the current fanbase that The-Dream has will love and support him all the same; so let me be the first to say, Dream, keep doing your thing.

The Death of Danity Kane [Part 1]

Last night was the season finale of Making The Band 4 and, if you're like me, then you're definitely not pleased with the way MTV is dragging this thing out. I was more than ready to see the dismantling of Danity Kane (Sorry, Darien), more specifically the departure of Aubrey; yet, MTV pulled a fast one and is airing the season finale, finale next week!

Talk about a genius marketing move to get ratings, but my thing is, this shit better deliver. If nobody is kicked out the group, a lot of people, blogs, and so on are going to be looking real stupid and I, for one, can't wait.

I think it's pretty obvious that I don't care much for Danity Kane, so I could care less about their future as a group. The only one that has any real talent is the one that Diddy said had a strong voice (what's her name again? I forgot. I just know he said he was using her on a few tracks of his). Other than that, none of 'em have any real talent and, to me, they come off as a PG version of the Pussycat Dolls. That fact alone makes it potently obvious that their entire existence is irrelevant but, at the same time, I respect the fact that they have fans and I understand how "damaged" some of them would feel. Do I care? Honestly, no; but that's not to say that I don't have a heart. The same sentiments I have for Danity Kane, I share for Day 26 and Donnie; so I guess you could say I hate 'em all the same. Just equally.

Oh well, there's no spilt milk on my behalf; so rest assured that I will be watching next Tuesday. Although I more than anticipate a disbanding (Diddy disbanded Da Band on their season finale, remember?), my instincts are telling me differently; so, I wouldn't be surprised either way. Therefore, before I completely rip Danity Kane apart (via words and space), I'll hold my words until I see things for myself. As should everybody else.

The Coolest Rapper

Ever since I heard the song "Kick, Push", I've been in love with Lupe Fiasco. Why? Well, to be honest I could probably answer that in so many different ways but, instead, I think I'll go with the fact that he's unique. Not only is the guy a breath of fresh air, but both his complex worldplay and his whole outlook on the game makes him stand out.

While some compare him to a modern day Nas (as compared to Lil' Wayne's Jay-Z), Lupe has certainly made a name for himself. Already spanning an assortment of material that includes two studio albums, the only thing missing is validation; but not even that comes overnight.

Nope. Just like every other rapper, Lupe must earn his stars and stripes; and with due time, I'm quite confident that he will. It's just a shame that a lot of people don't see him and recognize his talent for what he is and I guess that's why I'm doing this feature on him.

Look, I understand that everybody is all Lil' Wayne crazy and have been for quite some time; but I, myself, can no longer have Lil' Wayne at the top of my list when it comes to the hottest rappers. Sure, at one time or another, my list went as follows: Lil' Wayne, Jay-Z, and Lupe Fiasco; but as good as Tha Carter III was, it was not as good as Lupe Fiasco's The Cool or even the Untitled album from Nas. In fact, Tha' Carter III was all a product of pure hype so to even call it a classic would be wrong to begin with. At least, in my opinion anyway.

However, when it comes to quality and consistency, Lupe delivers on every verse he gives and, to me, it's all about replay value. I mean, there's still stuff on his earlier mixtapes that I don't understand and I guess that's the true mark of his genius because the same can be said for his albums. Both Food & Liquor and The Cool are dope in their own right and I'm sure his upcoming release, L-U-P End, will be just as good as well.

I guess the thing is, I respect Lupe and admire him for his style but I just don't understand his whole thought process when it comes to certain things. For one, I didn't agree with his flub-up at last year's Hip-Hop Honors and, two, I hate the fact that he's considering retirement. I mean, his two albums alone would be enough to put him in the Hip-Hop Hall of fame; but it's all about body of work. If he were to retire, some would look at it as if his arrogance got the best of him and, in ways, I could see how it would be fair to assume that. Nevertheless, Lupe remains a top 5 M.C. in my book; so regardless of how the cards fall as they may, let it be known that Lupe Fiasco IS [hands down] the coolest rapper.

Scarlett Johansson & Ryan Reynolds Tied The Knot

I've been putting this post off for almost a week now, but I feel as though I can ignore it no longer. Besides, as much as I'm distraught over this, nothing I can do can change things and I guess that's the thing that's been back and forth in my mind all week. It's like this...

For those that know me, you're all well aware that I'm absolutely obsessed with Scarlett Johansson; so, to hear that she's [now] married to Ryan Reynolds is just heartbreaking. Not only that, but just to imagine her and Ryan making this whole thing official just makes me sick to my stomach. Therefore, excuse me as I throw up yet again.

Why? Why would she want to get married to someone now, when what we have was already being set for the future? Was it something I said? Was it something I did? I can only imagine the possibilities and/or the scenarios that led to this result, but my only saving grace in the matter is that it's a Hollywood marriage. Meaning, give or take a few months and Scarlett will be back on the open market.

To say I can't wait would be an understatement but, in the meantime, I guess I still have Rosario Dawson and Raven Symone. Either/or I'm still in great shape so, Scarlett, enjoy it while it lasts. Your 15 minutes of Hollywood wedding bliss and blunder will come crashing down just like all the many before it. It's only a matter of time. And guess what? I'm countin'.

Halle Berry Covers Esquire

I almost forgot how sexy Halle Berry was but, rest assured, I'm back in my right mind. These new pics from Esquire was exactly what I needed to place her [back] in my top 10; so, if this is a sign of things to come, I can only hope for more provocativeness.

I know what you're thinking. That's such a "typical" guy thing to say and you're right, I agree. The thing is, last time I checked, I am a guy so kick rocks for those who wanna hate on my inner most desires. I'm only human alright and for me to say that Halle Berry looks damn good is not blasphemy. Ok? Some people would argue differently, but I don't have time for any of that nonsense. Instead, do yourself a favor and check out the new issue of Esquire when it hits newsstands here shortly.

T.I.: Paper Trail

“Heavy is the head that wears the crown” and, for years, T.I. has proclaimed himself king. Albeit a self-proclamation, T.I. has endured countless bouts of savagery and, with Paper Trail, it would only seem fitting that his rule would, again, come into question. “Facing all kinds of time” T.I. knows what lies ahead of him, as far as his upcoming incarceration is concerned, so rather than going quietly into the night, this album serves [momentarily] as his will and testament. Will it fall on deaf ears? Only time will tell but, for now, sit back, relax, and follow the trail to find out.

While last year’s T.I. Vs. T.I.P. was a commercial success, it was also considered “safe” by many. Without question it was a step back from KING and it left a lot of people wondering if T.I. had gone Hollywood. Sadly, I think that is the case because, again, Paper Trail follows that same formula. Songs such as “Whatever You Like” and “Live Your Life” only further that notion, however, T.I.P. is in full effect and it’s refreshing to hear him breathe life into tracks such as “I’m Illy” and the album intro “56 Bars”. Clearly, T.I.’s alter ego, T.I.P., is his saving grace and as to why he caters more to the T.I. crowd is beyond me. Trap Muzik is still his best album to date and until he smartens up and realizes that fans respect his prowess on the mic [more] as T.I.P., he’ll never be mentioned among the elite. At least in my eyes anyway.

Switching gears, Paper Trail is another step back for T.I. and will do little for his career. You would think, considering his situation, that this would be his most important album to date; but, throughout the 16 track opus, you never really get the feeling that T.I. put everything he had into this. Songs like “Porno Star” are laughable and that’s only the half of it.

The entire middle portion of the CD is strictly for the radio, but things pick up ever so slightly on the Swizz Beatz produced “Swing Ya’ Rag”. Trying to recreate the same magic the two had with “Bring ‘Em Out”, Swiss and T.I. do a good job here and gives hope for the album yet. Following suit, “What Up, What’s Happening” bangs heavy in true T.I.P. form but it’s the Jay-Z, Kanye West, and Lil’ Wayne featured “Swagga Like Us” that steals the show. From there, the album drags once again but closes nicely with the Justin Timberlake featured “Dead and Gone”. I don’t know what it is about these two artists, but their chemistry together is undeniable. Justin’s vocals compliments T.I.’s rhymes well and it just makes for one hell of a track.

So, in conclusion, Paper Trail has a few bright spots here and there; but is nothing spectacular to say the least. If anything, this sub par effort can be attributed to a lack of time but, still, that’s no excuse for T.I. to put out anything of lesser quality. “In order to understand my train of thought, you would have to put yourself in my position. You can’t expect me to think like you, cuz my life ain’t like yours” T.I. states on “Ready for Whatever” and that’s exactly the kind of effort he should’ve put forth with Paper Trail. A few tracks here and there is not acceptable, so to support mediocrity would be hypocritical on my part. Therefore, to those that choose to follow this Paper Trail, be sure you know where it leads because it's not to a life behind bars. Think about it.

Jazmine Sullivan: Fearless

Not too many protégés are successful in their efforts to establish themselves, but Jazmine Sullivan is a worthy exception. Not only has she captured the hearts [and minds] of fans alike with her debut single “Need U Bad”, but critical acclaim has praised her as the next Lauyrn Hill. Big shoes to fill, indeed; however, just like the title of her album suggests, Jazmine is unfazed. Besides, pressure is one thing. Acceptance is another.

Let’s be clear. To compare Jazmine Sullivan to Lauryn Hill is a little premature if you ask me but, still, the vocalisms are uncanny. The inflection in her voice is strikingly similar to that of Lauryn, but any and all comparisons stop there. Which is a good thing. Jazmine is a product of her own talent and Fearless not only showcases her range as a singer, but that of a songwriter as well.

Having penned the entire album, the highlights of her labor are clearly evident in songs such as “Bust Your Windows”, “Lions, Tigers & Bears” and “After The Hurricane”. I, myself, particularly enjoyed “In Love With Another Man” for it’s simple production and “testimonial” feel to it but, overall, this album has a lot of texture to it.

As far as subject matter, Jazmine touches on a wide range of issues that include domestic violence and one night stands, but does it as elegantly as one could imagine. Nothing is overtly offensive/over the top and that’s a true testament to Jazmine as a songwriter. So many [female] artists nowadays resort to sex and violence to sell records but, trust me, true talent will always shine through. It just goes to show that hard work and dedication goes a long way and Jazmine Sullivan is living proof.

Bear in mind that I've only been to Hooters TWICE in my lifetime, but each time has been met with disappointment. Not so much with the customer service or the food, but because I feel like I was misled. Allow me to explain.

As misogynistic as this may sound, guy's pretty much go to Hooters for three things: wings, beer, and boobs. Now, it's not rocket science as to what we (as guys) are ultimately there for; but just in MY experiences, both visits have come up a little "flat". Pun intended.

None of the waitresses were anything special, or anything to rave about, and it kind of kills the "Hooter fantasy" that every guy has. You know the one, the one that every girl @ Hooters is packing a set of Double D's. Yeah, talk about shattered dreams.

Words can't even begin to describe how unsatisfied I was and how things became an ultimate buzz kill, because if it's ONE thing that you would expect from a place called Hooters, it's boobs. Right? Maybe it's just me that thinks so but, then again, I do live in Alabama. Silicone isn't as prevalent down here in the heart of Dixie, but down home southern girls are. We damn near pride ourselves on that fact, so as to why our Hooters girls don't stack up is beyond me.

I guess you have to call an ace an ace and a spade a spade so, for what it's worth, I'll just be content with the fact that we even have an Hooters in the first place. Sure, things could be a little bigger better but...on second thought, I think I'll stop while I'm ahead.

Reagen Gomez Covers KING

The Parent Hood seems like ages ago, but my has little Zaria grown up. No longer is she the innocent little girl we watched growing up, but it's not like that's a bad thing. I'm more than pleased with the woman that she's grown into and I'm also happy that she's starting to get her own shine.

Aside from a few small roles here and there, Reagen Gomez has never really been given the opportunity to show off her talent, but I think all that is about to change. She recently appeared in the video for T.I.'s "Whatever You Like" video and that little bit of exposure may just be what she needs.

As you can see, she is also gracing the cover of the upcoming KING magazine and I truly feel that this is a good look for her. Not only does it shed the "innocent" stigma that was placed in the minds of fans watching her growing up, but it also symbolizes her transition into womanhood. Wouldn't you agree?

Anyway, be on the lookout for the new issue of KING magazine when it hits newsstands later this month and be sure to pick up a copy.

Hoopz Loves Money

Well, after it was all said and done, Hoopz proved otherwise that she loved money the most. Although it was a close race between her and White Boy, Hoopz prevailed and, finally, put an end to this awful, awful show.

Let's be clear for a second. I Love Money, by no means, is worthy of air time and I, for one, am glad to see it come to an end. Still, something tells me a second season will be greenlit into production and just the thought of that is making me sick to my stomach. All this celeb-reality crap is annoying and getting played out; so instead of focusing on all that bubblegum bullshit, VH1 should try to be original for once and stop jockin' MTV.

Anyway, enough of me ranting. Hoopz did her thing and, for that, I can't be mad. She looked good doing it, too; but that, that's a completly different story and I'll save that for another blog in the near future LOL. Oh well, be sure to check out the finale if you didn't catch it. It'll be on ALL week. You can damn near count on that.

You don't have to be a genius to realize that any movie with BOTH Scarlett Johannson and Eva Mendes is damn near certain to be a hit. Both these ladies are favorites of mine and the fact that I'm eager to see this film only enhances the fact. Therefore, Christmas can't come soon enough.

In the meantime, I came across these promotional posters for the film so feel free to comment. I, myself, particularly like the Scarlett one but, to those that know me, that comes as no surprise. Go figure.

Hustle & Flow

Next to Lil' Wayne, I'd have to say that Plies is a close 2nd when it comes to work ethic. Not only has this guy banged out two albums in less than a year and a half, but word has it that he's already planning to drop his third, Da Realist, this December.

While details have not been fully confirmed, his new single "Pants Hang Low" is all the indication you need that a new album is on the way. Unprecedented, I know. Especially when considering that Plies just released his 2nd album, Definition of Real, a few months back. In fact, he dropped on the same day as Lil' Wayne! How crazy is that?

Like I said, I'm not hatin' on the guy because clearly their seems to be a market for his music; but, me, I believe in such a thing as oversaturation. To have albums come out so close together kills anticipation and only makes it seem like the artist is trying to force themselves down the buyer's throat. Do I honestly feel that this is the case with Plies? Honestly, no. But that's not to say that I agree with him coming back out so quickly. If anything, he should milk a few more singles out of D.O.R., but that's just my opinion. Like it or not, Plies seems intent on pushing forward with this and one can only imagine how "real" he'll be this time around.

Christina Milian Inks Deal With MySpace Records

Although her departure from Def Jam was less than graceful, Christina Milian has found a new recording home in that of MySpace Records. Now, as much as I’m a fan of hers, I’m excited that she’ll finally have the creative direction/control that she didn‘t have at Def Jam; but, to be honest, I could care less about this whole situation to begin with. None of her albums have ever lived up to their billing and only moderately have they ever been worth it. Trust me, me and my wallet know that for sure.

Anyway, as far as details are concerned, her upcoming album is still in the early stages and is scheduled for a release sometime next spring. In the meantime, the lead single “Me Against The World” will debut on MySpace on October 6th, so be on the lookout for that as well.

Other than that, I hope Christina will make the most of this opportunity and that it proves to be a success; but only time will tell. At the moment, my gut instinct is saying that it won’t, but I’d much rather see how things play out before adding my two cents. That being said, I wish Christina the best of luck and we’ll see which kind manifests itself.

Will Smith Signs On For I Am Legend Prequel

With a lot of questions being left unanswered in last year's I Am Legend, it would only seem fitting that a prequel would be greenlit in an effort to wrap up things. Now, while nothing is yet confirmed as to what all will be explained, Will Smith will reprise his role as Robert Neville and the story will reveal what happened before the infected took over New York. Other than that, not much else is none, as no [official] script has been written; however, it is expected to be released sometime late next year.

Kanye Pushes Album Up To November, Confirms Title As "808's & Heartbreak"

According to his blog, Kanye West has feverishly finished his upcoming album, 808's & Heartbreak, and will release it sometime in November. The album, originally slated for December, will feature West's current single "Love LockDown" and is rumored to rely heavily on the use of the auto-tune effect. Although that has not quite been confirmed, 808's & Heartbreak will still be a welcome addition to Kanye's catalog and be monumental in pushing Hip-Hop to new boundaries.

Now, for my two cents. I think it's a smart move for Kanye to release 808's & Heartbreak as soon as possible, because he'll [undoubtedly] capitalize off of anticipation alone. Not to mention, if things had of stayed as scheduled, it would've been Kanye Vs. 50: Part II and that's already been done before. 50 should take a loss and move on, in my opinion, but maybe he'll realize that when his new album, Before I Self-Destruct, blows up in his face.

Getting back on track, I think the direction Kanye is going in will suit him well and will prove to be a success; but too many rappers are singing nowadays and that's [really] not a good look. Let's just hope Hip-Hop grows out of this faze; if not, God help us all.
