Introducing...Teyana Taylor

Not everybody can jump out of a Barbie box on MTV’s My Super Sweet 16 but for Teyana Taylor, life is anything but ordinary. Boasting an impeccable sense of style, Teyana was destined to be a star in her own right so it’s no secret as to why every industry insider is proclaiming her as "the next big thing". Me personally, I haven’t seen anything that screams “star quality” but I’d be hard-pressed to argue against the fact that Teyana does stand out amongst other artists her age.

Being co-signed by one of Hip-Hop’s biggest producers is quite an acknowledgement but, quite frankly, who would dare question the genius of Pharrell Williams? Far be it from me but Pharrell has a unique thought process that can only come out of left field. His ear for talent is second to none and with Teyana Taylor, her formal introduction to the world, From A Planet Called Harlem, is sure to be quite interesting to say the least. I’m definitely interested to see what Miss Taylor has to offer but if it’s anything like her lead single “Google Me” then I’m kind of second guessing whether or not I’d still be interested. Don’t get me wrong, I’m a huge fan of alternative music but Teyana’s style may be a little too much for my tastes.

Not that it matters, one person’s opinion doesn’t make much of a difference, but Teyana’s résumé speaks for itself. Not only is she one of the originators of the Chicken Noodle Soup dance but how many people can say that they choreographed for Beyonce? Not many, let alone someone who’s only 16, but for further confirmation, peep Jay-Z’s “Blue Magic” clip. The big haired girl dancing is none other than…you guessed it…Teyana, herself.

All in all, Teyana is clearly an artist to watch in ‘08 and only time will tell how she will be received. My first impression is that she will go over well with kids her age but will suffer financially because she’s not really marketable for mainstream. Again, only time will tell but if Teyana is as fresh as a pair of Ice Cream sneakers, Pharrell will have one more successful business venture. Thanks in part to the self-proclaimed, teen president Teyana Taylor.
